Lassa fever is one of those funky zoonotic diseases, which is just a fancy way of saying that humans catch it from animals. So, who’s the culprit? Meet the multimammate rat, a rodent from the genus Mastomys.

These little guys are the ultimate hosts for the Lassa virus. The catch? They don’t get sick themselves! Instead, they just go about their ratty business, shedding the virus in their urine and poop!

What’s the Virus All About?

Lassa fever is caused by the Lassa virus, which is part of the Arenaviridae family. The Arenaviridae are a family of RNA viruses that hitch a ride in rodents (like mice and rats) and occasionally jump to humans, causing serious diseases.

Sounds serious, right? But here is the twist: around 80% of people who get infected with this virus either feel nothing at all or just have mild symptoms. So, while it’s important to be aware of it, not everyone ends up in a panic!
